FAQs
Who is Art Psychotherapy for?
Art Therapy is a creative form of psychotherapy that is effective for all age groups in a wide range of settings including mental health, education, special needs, healthcare, community, social services and private practice.
How does it work?
Art therapy’s is a holistic approach that allows for each client through their own individual creative expression to explore to find understanding in order to resolve emotional difficulties, challenges with self-esteem and confidence, relationships and more. The exercise of making art allows each client to explore what may not be possible through words and at a pace that suits them.
Do I need to be artistic?
There is no expectation of artistic skill. This is not an art class. The emphasis is on the clients experience and process and what is revealed to them through the making of the image. As children we expressed ourselves through art without question. Unfortunately, this wonderful language is not as valued as it should be and so we have forgotten. But it is within you.
Do I need to bring my own art materials?
No, all materials are provided for you.
How will I know what to draw?
Carl Jung, amongst others, believed that making art connects us to the deepest part of ourselves allowing us to bypass the limitations of vocabulary in order to access our inner emotions and things forgotten, making space to heal and transform our lives.
Do you analyse what I create?
My role as an Art Psychotherapist is to provide a space that is contained and safe where you may express and explore through your art. Only you really know the meaning within your own creative experience and process. I am present to support, guide and help you to understand and respond to the symbolism within your work.
Do I keep my art work?
Yes, all the pieces you create belong to you. While we are working together, I will keep your pieces in a safe place until we have completed our work together after which you can decide what you want to do with your work.
How do I benefit from Art Therapy?
Art therapy provides a space to express difficult emotions. It also aids in developing coping skills, building confidence and self-esteem. It enables the enhancement of self-awareness and self-regulation and most importantly, building emotional resilience.
How long does treatment take?
This depends on each individual client. I generally suggest agreeing to six weeks of sessions to start with a review after the initial six weeks. Some clients may meet their goals after the first six weeks and others may need longer or on-going exploration and emotional support depending on their needs and circumstances.
What qualifications should an Art Therapist have
Art Psychotherapists must complete a postgraduate programme. This is usually at Master’s Level at an approved college. This includes a minimum number of supervised clinical hours and personal therapy, as well as theoretical and experiential learning. Art therapists should be registered with their professional association which governs and upholds standards and ethics of the profession. In Ireland this is The Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists (IACAT). Practicing art psychotherapists must receive regular supervision in accordance with the ethics of their professional body.
